Gio Reyna has been forced to withdraw from the United States squad for their upcoming friendly matches against Canada and New Zealand due to injury.

Borussia Dortmund have been dealt an injury scare heading into the team's gruelling run of fixtures, as Gio Reyna has been forced to drop out of the USMNT roster for their upcoming fixtures against Canada and New Zealand after picking up a groin injury.

Gio Reyna sidelined with groin injury

According to a statement from US Soccer, Reyna will depart the national team camp after being diagnosed with a left groin strain. It currently remains to be seen how serious the injury is or how long the attacking midfielder will be sidelined for.

Reyna has made one appearance off the bench for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, but showed glimpses of his quality during pre-season. Sebastian Kehl said recently that Reyna could establish himself as an important player for the Black and Yellows in the coming months. The BVB sporting director also praised Reyna for all the hard work he did during the off-season

The 21 year old was limited to a bit-part role at Borussia Dortmund last season, and also found playing time hard to come by on loan at Nottingham Forest. VfL Bochum were interested in signing Reyna on loan this summer, but the move failed to materialise.

Borussia Dortmund have a busy run of fixtures coming up after the international break, with the league phase of the UEFA Champions League set to get underway. Nuri Sahin's side will next be in action against FC Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on September 13.

Gio Reyna will now head to Dortmund to undergo tests and determine the severity of his injury. The hope at the club will certainly be that he can recover from this latest setback and return to action before long.
