Gio Reyna will stay at Borussia Dortmund beyond the summer transfer window, with Sebastian Kehl revealing that the attacking midfielder could play an important role for the team this season.

There has been speculation this summer that Gio Reyna could leave Borussia Dortmund after falling out of favour at the club. But the USMNT international is now set to stay on, and could yet play an important role for the team. Sebastian Kehl has given an update on the club's plans for Reyna this season.

"Gio could become very important for us this season" - Sebastian Kehl on Reyna's future

In an interview with BILD, the Borussia Dortmund sporting director said, "He has to accept his role and free himself from it. It was clear when we held the talks in the summer that Gio wanted to take on this role. That there would be enough games where we would need him. We know that he has incredible skills."

"Gio could become very important for us this season. There are no other thoughts. There's nothing on the table and I haven't heard that the player wants to leave."

Kehl also spoke about the progress Reyna made during the off-season. "He worked on himself, worked on his stability, worked on his confidence. His clever movement between the lines and his goal threat - he's developed that further."

Reyna found playing time hard to come by at Borussia Dortmund last season and decided to join Nottingham Forest on a loan deal in January. He was reduced to a bit-part role there as well, and returned to BVB at the end of his loan spell.

The 21 year old said in June that he wants to be at a club where he can feel valued and play regularly. And while several reports in recent months have claimed that he is free to leave BVB, nothing has materialised so far.

Now, Gio Reyna is set to stay at Borussia Dortmund and will hope for a resurgence this season. He has made one appearance off the bench so far this campaign.
