Julian Nagelsmann believes that Niclas Füllkrug has an important role to play for Germany, but has refused to reveal whether the Borussia Dortmund striker will be in the starting XI against Denmark on Saturday.

Niclas Füllkrug has enjoyed an excellent start to Euro 2024, scoring two goals in three appearances of the bench. The 31 year old rescued top spot in Group A for Julian Nagelsmann’s side by scoring a last-gasp equaliser against Switzerland. And with the BVB striker in such good form, many are calling for him to be given an opportunity in the Germany starting XI.

For Nagelsmann, Füllkrug remains an important player regardless of whether he plays from the start or comes off the bench. But the former Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig head coach is keeping his cards close to his chest on who will start in the number nine role on Saturday.

"I think Füllkrug’s role has been really important, he has scored twice and played an important role as a substitute," Nagelsmann said during his pre-match press conference. "His heart and dedication has helped the team a lot, bringing big energy from the bench. A player doesn’t need to start to have a big role for the team. It's always about making the most of the opportunities you have."

Kai Havertz has been Nagelsmann’s preferred striker so far at the European Championship, and scored one goal during the group stage. There has been talk about Germany going with both Havertz and Füllkrug in the starting XI for their round of 16 clash against Denmark.

Niclas Füllkrug has scored 13 goals in just 19 appearances for Germany since making his national team debut in November 2022.
