Marcel Schmelzer could become a part of the coaching staff of former Borussia Dortmund teammate and newly appointed head coach Nuri Sahin.
Nuri Sahin was appointed Borussia Dortmund head coach earlier this week, signing a three year contract to succeed Edin Terzic. The 35 year old is now getting ready for the start of the new season. And the new-look first-team coaching staff is set to include fellow former BVB midfielder Sven Bender. And BILD are now claiming that another ex-BVB star could form part of the coaching set-up.
According to the tabloid, internal discussions have already taken place at the club about bringing Marcel Schmelzer on board as an assistant coach. And it is quite possible that he could be a part of Sahin’s coaching staff in the first-team next season.
The 36 year old served as an assistant coach for the Borussia Dortmund U-17s this season, and helped them win the B-Junioren Bundesliga title. He was earlier set to take on a similar role for the U-23s in the 3. Liga next season. Now, the former BVB left-back could be set for another promotion, this time to the first-team.
Schmelzer retired in 2022, having spent his entire senior playing career at Borussia Dortmund. Playing at left-back, he made a total of 367 appearances for the Black and Yellows, and won two Bundesliga titles and three DFB-Pokal titles with the club. He captained the side from 2016-18 and could now make his return to the first-team as a coach.
