Julian Nagelsmann has revealed that he is planning to go with Kai Havertz as the starting striker for Germany ahead of Niclas Füllkrug at Euro 2024.
Germany are set to begin their Euro 2024 campaign next Friday as they take on Scotland in the tournament opener. Niclas Füllkrug is one of two Borussia Dortmund players in Germany's Euro 2024 squad, and it looks increasingly likely that he will start the campaign on the bench.
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann announced during his press conference on Thursday that the 31 year old is behind Kai Havertz in the pecking order for strikers. But he also backed Füllkrug to get plenty of playing time and cause all sorts of problems to opposition defenders.
"We're delighted that Füllkrug is here again," Nagelsmann said. "It's good that we have a genuine striker in the squad again. The roles are clearly divided. When Kai performs, he has a slight edge. He has to perform. Füllkrug will get his playing time and create goals and cause havoc."
Füllkrug, who joined Borussia Dortmund from Werder Bremen last summer, played a crucial role in the club’s run to the Champions League final. The towering striker scored 16 goals and assisted a further ten in 46 appearances across all competitions for the Black and Yellows.
Havertz, on the other hand, found a new lease of life after joining Arsenal. The former Bayer Leverkusen star registered 14 goals and seven assists in the recently concluded season.
Germany will go up against Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland during the Euro 2024 group stage.
