Waldemar Anton is eager to play an important role at Borussia Dortmund after joining the club on a four year contract.

Waldemar Anton becomes Borussia Dortmund’s first signing of the summer transfer window. The 27 year old arrives from VfB Stuttgart on a deal worth 22 million euros. The Black and Yellows beat out competition from Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Anton, who is expected to play a key role in defence next season.

Signing a new centre-back was on top of Borussia Dortmund’s list of priorities this summer following the departure of Mats Hummels. And in Anton, BVB have signed one of the Bundesliga’s best defenders.

"I'm really looking forward to my first game at Signal Iduna Park, to seeing the fans, and to meeting my teammates. I wasn't planning to change clubs – but then Borussia Dortmund came along," Anton said. "A top club that just made it to the Champions League final. This shows the potential that this club has. From the very beginning, everyone at BVB made me feel that they really wanted to sign me and that I could and should play an important role. I'm really looking forward to getting started."

Anton played a key role in Stuttgart’s second place finish in the Bundesliga last season, and was also rewarded with a place in the Germany squad for Euro 2024. He is a towering centre-back who is adept at building play out from the back, and also never shies away from a duel. Anton will also bring leadership experience to Borussia Dortmund, having captained Stuttgart last season.

Borussia Dortmund will hope that Anton can add some stability to the Borussia Dortmund defence and form a solid defensive partnership with Nico Schlotterbeck for years to come.

It remains to be seen what the arrival of Waldemar Anton means for Niklas Süle, who is facing an uncertain future at the club after falling out of favour this season. But for now, Borussia Dortmund have three solid Germany internationals in their ranks at centre-back.

Anton could be joined by Stuttgart teammate Serhou Guirassy at Borussia Dortmund next season. The Black and Yellows are leading the race to sign the striker, who has a release clause of 18 million euros in his contract.
