Borussia Dortmund will hope to bolster their squad in January but could well be limited by a lack of funds.

The January transfer window is almost upon us, and Borussia Dortmund are in desperate need of reinforcements. Signing a new full-back is on top of their list of priorities for next month, and Sebastian Kehl has seemingly identified Ian Maatsen as his first-choice target, with the Black and Yellows reportedly keen on signing the Chelsea left-back on loan with an option to buy.

Fran Garcia and Ferdi Kadıoğlu are other left-backs who have been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund. But they may well be out of the club's price range, with reports claiming that BVB have less than ten million euros to spend on a new left-back.

A spectacular return of Jadon Sancho has also been touted in recent months, and it appears that the forward will be making a spectacular return to Borussia Dortmund on a loan deal from Manchester United.

BVB will likely need to sell players in order to generate funds for further new signings. And while a wholesale clear-out is not to be expected, Donyell Malen and Thomas Meunier are two players who could potentially leave the club in January.

Another possible task on Kehl's in-tray for the winter transfer window could be to resolve the future of Gio Reyna. While the USMNT international is unlikely to leave Borussia Dortmund on a permanent transfer in January, a loan move could be in the offing. Reyna has struggled for playing time this season, and has just 18 months left on his current contract with BVB.

Borussia Dortmund made two shrewd signings during the 2023 January transfer window, bringing in versatile full-back Julian Ryerson and highly rated winger Julien Duranville. The BVB bosses will likely be on the lookout for more such transfers next month as they look to help the team get back on track.
