Former Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho has been linked with a return to his old club for quite some time now.
He is currently available in the market as a free agent after his contract with Manchester United expired last month.
The Englishman was last seen at Aston Villa on a loan spell that failed to ignite his best form and is now on the cusp of joining another club.
Dortmund are the side to have been linked with him the most but a return to Signal Iduna Park for their prodigal son isn't straight forward.
According to previous reports, the club is only willing to offer him a performance-related contract and Sancho will have to accept a pay cut too.
So far, the Bundesliga giants have not initiated any contact with the player but recent developments suggest there could be if their pursuit of another player fails.
Die Schwarzgelben are linked with FC Koln star Said El Mala, the highly rated forward who played a starring role for the Billy Goats in their top-flight survival last season.
However, their initial bid of €30 million was rejected by their league rivals as they demand €50 million for him, a hefty price tag that Dortmund are unwilling to pay.
The club do reportedly view highly of El Mala, given his talents and potential. But if Koln remaind adamanent on their exorbitant demands, then the BVB could be forced to end their pursuit.
In such a case, Dortmund might look towards Sancho, who is available for free although his powers have waned in the years since departing the club.
Having established himself as one of the brightest young talents during his four-year spell with Dortmund, Manchester United priced Sancho away for a staggering £73million.
However, the England international could never really justify the fety outlay and cut a pale shadow of his self that light up the Bundesliga with his attacking flair and flamboyance.
He even had a couple of loan spells away from Old Trafford, including to Westfalonstadion in 2024 for a few months, but none could spark his best form again.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten (via Yahoo Sports), Sancho's return to Dortmund was never planned by the club as the board believes he lacks the qualities that made him a star during his first stint.
Alternatively, Niko Kovac's side could go after Arsenal's prodigious talent Ethan Nwaneri instead with the 18-year-old considered among potential sales this summer.
