Fabio Silva has opened up on his undying spirit that has resulted in a goal for Borussia Dortmund lately. The 24-year-old forward bagged the only goal of their 1-0 win over FC Tokyo on Sunday as the BVB saw off their preseason tour of Japan on a positive note.
Niko Kovac welcomed back many of his national team stars for the first time this preseason as the Croatian picked a strong XI for this one after having experimented with an amalgamation of reserve players, new signings and some squad players.
Yet it was Silva who popped up with the winning goal on a rainy night in Tokyo, lashing a stunning effort from inside the box after Tokyo failed to clear a looping cross from Daniel Svensson on the right.
The goal was a huge morale-booster for Silva, who failed to justify his €22million price tag last season after netting just twice in the Bundesliga and failing to dislodge Serhou Guirassy as Dortmund's first-choice striker in the XI.
After his match-winning heroics, the 24-year-old Portuguese revealed that it's all down to his persistence. Speaking to the press after the match, Silva said:
"“You just have to keep going. That’s the attitude I always have. Last season, you could see how I work, how I wait for my moment, for my chance. Of course, I want to score more goals this season than I did last season, but I believe my role on this team can be more than just scoring goals.""
Whenever he's started for Dortmund as the lone striker, Silva has been found wanting while also offering no great shakes after coming off the bench as a substitute.
His only saving grace were bagging a handful of assists; seven in all competitions as the Portuguese rather emerged valuable in the side from a creative standpoint.
Silva aims to continue the run in the new season as the former Wolverhampton Wanderers player believes his goal-count will improve along the way too.
""I provided a lot of assists last season, and I want to continue doing that. I can contribute in many ways. You can see how I move for the team and my teammates and how I set up goals. The goals will come all on their own. That’s how it’s been my entire career, and that’s how I’ll keep doing it.”"he added
He will looking to bag more goals in their next friendly against Arsenal on 9 August.
