Borussia Dortmund: Should We Be Concerned With No Transfers?
By John Harbeck
With many big clubs constantly in the rumors for big price tag players, us over at BVB Buzz are feeling a little left out with Borussia Dortmund failing to make any to this point in the January window.
The lack of activity got me thinking what could it all mean. I came up with three logical reasons for the dearth of rumors of players coming in.
First up is that Borussia Dortmund doesn’t have any money to spend. This would make sense as the club clearly has top three ambitions, Thomas Tuchel even said as much. Most clubs with that kind of ambition strengthen their squad ahead of a second half of the season push. The reason why I don’t see this as a possibility is that the summer spending was very close to netting out at zero. Borussia Dortmund did spend a good deal of cash, but that was on the heels of an incredible amount of money also incoming on big name players being sold.

With Borussia Dortmund advancing to the round of 16 in Champions League and continuing to have strong attendance figures (among the best in the world in fact) I don’t see money as a hold up to spending more money.
Second in the reasons that Borussia Dortmund aren’t spending money is that the club is still settling in with all the new faces. This summer eight players were brought into the squad that would have seen a lot of time if not for injury or have seen plenty of time in the first half.
With all the new names coming in this summer and all the young players, on-field chemistry has been an issue. The most prevalent times that this has happened during matches this season is when quick transitions are happening, specifically defensively. I have been harping on this the entire winter break during the friendlies that it should be the highest priority to work on this facet of the game.
Again, with all the new faces and the high amount of squad turnover from match to match under Tuchel, Borussia Dortmund simply haven’t been able to build that continuity that teams that have been together for a long stretch can. For my money, this is the reason for not adding new facing this window.

The final reason I believe is a possibility that the club isn’t making any incoming moves is because there are already a huge number of players on the roster. Despite suffering a pile of injuries this season, Borussia Dortmund seems to have a selection problem every match. For my money, if everyone was healthy BVB would be three players deep at every position. Now that isn’t to say there are thirty-three players worthy of suiting up, but rather multiple players have the ability to player multiple positions at a high level. For example, on either wing, I would trust eight players to do a job if selected.
With such a bloated squad (although needing to be giving the injury problems) I believe Borussia Dortmund don’t want to add any more because it would create further congestion. What that means, is BVB might be one of the rare clubs that are happy with their squad. Could it be? I would say no just because of the injury problems, but if somehow those were fixed, the possibility is that the club is happy.
