Borussia Dortmund v Werder Bremen: Post Game Quotes
By John Harbeck
An away win is an away win for Borussia Dortmund and despite the ugly nature of the win fans have to be happy, but what does the manager and players have to say?
First we lead off with the Borussia Dortmund head man, Thomas Tuchel:
"“We made a very bright start, particularly in the first 15 minutes. But during that spell we missed the opportunity to add a second directly after taking the lead. Then we were careless in letting Bremen get back into the game and allowed the match to open up. For the rest of the game we failed to see through a lot of chances – big chances too – and as a result we were never truly comfortable. That’s really irritating. Of course, in the end the overall feeling is happiness at having ground out the victory. The injuries mean we simply haven’t got enough training time behind us yet. Perhaps we just need a few more positive results like today to make things easier for ourselves. I promised myself before the match that I would be happy if we won – no matter how. We came here to win. So I’m simply going to enjoy it.”"
It is interesting that Tuchel used the strong language of “irritating”. It was quite clear toward the end of the match how frustrated the manager was becoming, but usually more guarded terms are used after a win. This leads me to believe that despite collecting three point on the road (only the third win away) Borussia Dortmund are not pleased. Given the narrow scoreline after being up 10 men for so long, I would agree. BVB need to improve their finishing and can’t have the normal lapses in play that led to the Werder Bremen goal.

Next up is goal keeper Roman Weidenfeller, who had himself a good game:
"“The momentum swung back and forth in the match. We should’ve really seen out the win more calmly towards the end but that didn’t quite work out. Ultimately we’re just happy that we got the victory. We have now picked up the first three points of the New Year. That marks the start of our catch-up mission.”"
The veteran goal keeper seemed much more pleased with the victory, likely because of how well he played. Outside of a few misplayed distribution moves, Weidenfeller’s shot stopping was wonderful, including a kick save that should be up for save of the week. He referenced a need to see out the win and the point is well taken. Borussia Dortmund had almost two dozen chances to score and perhaps on another day, or with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up top, BVB would have run away with the match.
Finally, Andre Schurrle spoke of how comfortable he felt playing as the lone striker. He said he enjoyed his opportunity and made reference to having the ability to play out wide once Aubameyang returns.

This was indeed the best we have seen from Schurrle in some time. In the first fifteen minutes he had three shots, one turned out to be a goal, while the other two were narrowly saved. Schurrle’s performance gave me confidence going forward that Borussia Dortmund will be in fine hands until Aubameyang’s return.
