The story for Borussia Dortmund was always going to be the fans that were turned away as a result of the closure of the Yellow Wall.  It shouldn’t have been though as BVB stormed to an easy victory to wash the poor taste of Champions League out of their mouth.

As was predicted in the preview, Borussia Dortmund seemed to be galvanized by the recent turbulence and came out guns blazing.  The long list of chances missed against Benfica was something in the past and as a collective BVB were much more clinical.  That isn’t to say every member of the squad was improved, Aubameyang still has yet to find the net, however, for the most part, Borussia Dortmund seems to be back.

The lineup prediction of an almost completely unchanged eleven with a few exceptions came almost true as Andre Schurrle came in for Erik Durm, Castro came in for Guerreiro and Ginter was in place of an ill Sokratis.  Other than those changes, BVB were unchanged from the weekend.  The continuality that Thomas Tuchel seems to be building appears to be a positive.

Borussia Dortmund immediately set about putting pressure on a weak Wolfsburg side from the very start.  Within ten minutes, BVB had fired three shot, forcing a pair of saves from goalkeeper Benaglio. Then finally in the 20th minute, Lukasz Piszczek pulled out his best billiards shot and banked a cross of Wolfsburg defender Jeffrey Bruma to give BVB a 1-0 lead.

The high pressure and complete ball dominance continued by Borussia Dortmund, thanks in large part to a compliant Wolfsburg club.  Still, at half-time BVB were only up 1-0, leaving many to wonder if a second half collapse was coming.

A collapse wasn’t to be as man of the match, Piszczek found a sliver of space during a broken kind of set piece for the second BVB goal.  He nodded home a fumbling ball from close range, aided by some horrible Wolfsburg defending.

From that point, BVB set out to shut down the match by closing Wolfsburg down hard.  For the match, the stats weren’t even close as BVB had more than double the tackles, 61% possession and a 24-6 shot advantage (all per whoscored.com).  The winning streak under Thomas Tuchel at home continues, despite the difficult circumstances.

Ousmane Dembele wasn’t done with the match yet as he got in on the action in the 59th minute with a headed goal of his own.  On a Piszczek cross (man he was everywhere) Dembele scored a goal that while not the most pretty header, still went in.  The youngster wheeled away in pure joy, pointing at his head with a “see guys what I did” type of look.

The three points was a marvelous occasion for BVB as the win now puts them at third, level with Hoffenheim at 37 points.  With a still packed schedule coming up, the club will need to build in all the cushion possible given that the off matches are likely to happen just given fatigue.
