Borussia Dortmund vs Wolfsburg: Match Ratings
By John Harbeck
Finishing up our Borussia Dortmund recap series against Wolfsburg we have some match ratings, see how your favorite player performed.
A 3-0 win that Borussia Dortmund mustered will predictably lead to some very good ratings, so here we go.
GK: Bürki: 5.5
Once again, how high of a rating can you give a goal keeper that doesn’t have to do much? He did make one save that was struck straight at him but with a good deal of power.
RB: Piszczek: 9
Piszczek was so very good yesterday. He scored and set up a goal along with providing the needed effort to bank the first goal into the net.
CB: Ginter: 6.5
Ginter put in a solid performance for Borussia Dortmund. Many were probably worried about him partnering with Bartra, but ultimately the two formed a usable duo. There wasn’t a great deal of difficult defending to do, however. Ginter was credited with a goal on the Piszczek goal so his rating bumps up half a point.

CB: Bartra: 6
With more of a traditional four man backline, Bartra wasn’t given the passing freedom that he enjoyed before, but his cutting passes were still there in a smaller amount.
LB: Schmelzer: 7
Schmelzer was allowed to attack all evening and he took advantage of it ranging far up the field in both defense and attack to great effect.
DM: Weigl: 8
Weigl, like against Benfica was given all the time in the world while on the ball. He could pick out any pass he liked and was able to cut out nearly all Wolfsburg attacking moves easily enough.
LM: Reus: 6.5
Sometimes a player can morph into a different version of himself as his career progresses and we might be seeing that with Marco Reus. He doesn’t seem inclined to dribble or beat his man as frequently as in years past, but his passing, specifically passes setting up scoring opportunities have gone up. Perhaps that is just a perception from the past few matches, I don’t know. Against Wolfsburg, Reus did press with impressive eagerness and was a key cog in Borussia Dortmund dominating possession.
AM: Castro: 7.5
In this match Castro absolutely delivered. All the passes that I critize as trying to create too much all came off and it was an example of just how much he can impact a match on the right day.
AM: Dembélé: 7.5
Dembele probably should have had another goal or two, but we’ll take just the one today. The youngster was his typical self and was dangerous throughout.

LM: Schürrle: 5.5
He put in the defensive work, but at this point Schurrle shouldn’t be played anywhere but striker. The impact just isn’t there from any other position.
ST: Aubameyang: 5
Didn’t finish his chances yet again.
Subs:
RM: Pulisic: 6
Pulisic was the only sub that really had a chance to shine with the other two getting less than 20 minutes. He was fine from his role and contributed to some degree in the attack.
