So this is what Borussia Dortmund is capable of.  In what was their best performance of the season, BVB went away from home and won easily 3-0 against SC Freiburg.

Borussia Dortmund playing away from home has been a dangerous proposition this season.  The results have been mixed, to say the least.  Look no further than the Darmstadt loss for proof. Today was a different story, one of a club firing on all cylinders.  It is what this collection of players is capable of.

After setting up in the now normal 3-5-2, Borussia Dortmund went about dominating the match in every way.  For the first ten minutes, they set siege to the Freiburg goal only to be denied by the gatekeeper Alexander Schwolow with help provided by a few defensive blocks.

More from BVB Buzz

The formidable Freiburg defensive effort didn’t last long as a set piece in the 13th minute ultimately did the early damage to put Borussia Dortmund on their way.  Raphael Guerreiro served in a magnificent in swinging ball for a charging Sokratis to easily head home.  The path to the ball and the nonchalance of the finish made the whole situation appear too good to be true.

From that point, BVB went about heaping on the pressure to a clearly overwhelmed Freiburg side. The poor newly promoted side just didn’t have the skill to complete the most basic of passes against the ferocious press Borussia Dortmund unleashed. Starting from the front with Marco Reus and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the entire BVB side put on a display of total commitment and cohesion.

The impressive showing didn’t result in a second goal in the first half, but the match just didn’t have the typical feeling of wastefulness that has been a theme for BVB.  Yes, there were numerous opportunities to put the match away, but Freiburg never seemed like scoring so it just didn’t matter.

Wasteful was not a word that could be used to describe the second half for BVB.  The wonderful press was still employed to great results only now there was an end product.

Batman and Robin finally reemerged from the shadows the rebuild the most dangerous partnership in the Bundesliga.  Marco Reus picked up the ball on the left, setting up his defender. After a deft poke through the legs of Kubler, Reus found himself with a poor angle to shoot.  Who was back post providing an option?  Aubameyang, of course, and it was an easy tap-in after a clever run to lose his man.  This took place in the 55th minute and from there the Aubameyang goalless streak had finally ended.

Aubameyang didn’t take nearly as long to score his next goal as in the 70th minute Ousmane Dembele slipped in Erik Durm.  One on one with the goal keeper, Durm unselfishly played a square pass to Aubameyang so he could net his second goal of the match.

That goal took whatever fight Freiburg had left in them and Thomas Tuchel quickly emptied his bench to give the creative types a rest before the big upcoming fixtures.  Out came Dembele, Reus, and Aubameyang.  That left the rest of the squad to wait until the clock ticked up to 90.  In short order it did and Borussia Dortmund walked away from a potential pitfall with an easy three points.
