Borussia Dortmund vs Bayern Leverkusen: Post Match Comments
By John Harbeck
With six goals, including young Christian Pulisic and a notable injury, many among the Borussia Dortmund squad had something to say.
We’ll lead off with Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl as quoted by bvb.com:
"“Leverkusen never gave up and made us work hard, pressed as expected and never let us breathe for a minute. We scored the goals at the right time. The game could have turned each time they pulled a goal back, but luckily we responded quickly on both occasions. All in all it was a deserved victory.”"

I wrote in the match recap, how truly difficult the match was despite the lopsided end score. Bayern Leverkusen, to their credit, never gave an inch and had attacking intent to pull the match back to within one on two occasions. The positive tactics that Leverkusen used is what makes the Bundesliga a great league to watch as clubs aren’t afraid to play proactive soccer.
Next up we have Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel speaking on the Marco Reus injury as quoted by tyw.bundesligalounge.com:
"“That’s a sad news, since an appearance on Wednesday is out of the question. He suffered a muscle injury in his thigh during a long sprint. That hits us hard. He was the one to push us and take responsibility today during our slow start, he was wide awake. He is playing extremely solid for weeks, on a high level and is an important personality on the pitch. That he will miss Wednesday is an enormous loss for us and it clouds our victory.”"
Losing Marco Reus for an extended period of time hurts. Especially so with the huge Champions League and DFB-Pokal matches upcoming on the schedule. Fortunately, BVB appears to have capable options on the bench. Christian Pulisic was marvelous after coming on and there are others who can play in the withdrawn/winger role.

Finally, we will finish up with the now fired manager Rodger Schmidt, again as quoted on bvb.com:
"“Congratulations to Thomas Tuchel and BVB. 6-2 is a brutal result, but even though it might sound strange I thought my team performed very well. I can identify well with this performance. Despite what was in the end a very clear result, it was a good step. Ultimately it’s a question of quality. BVB simply have top-class talent in their offensive ranks, they’re comparable with Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in that respect.”"
While anyone could see that Schmidt was exaggerating about the level of BVB being on line with Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, the fact is that Borussia Dortmund, on their day can hang with them. We have seen it in the two Champions League fixtures against Real Madrid this season and the 1-0 victory of Bayern Munich. The only question holding BVB back is that of consistency. Moving forward into next season, the club needs to cut out the ugly losses, like the Darmstadt away loss to really contend.
