Where can we begin? Borussia Dortmund had its ups and downs throughout the whole game and ultimately this led to penalties which we lost 5-4. Lets begin talking about individual performances.

Individual Performances:

Bürki: 9/10

Bürki was clearly our best player on the field tonight. His amazing saves kept Dortmund in the game time and time again including a huge one earlier on the game denying Müller.

Piszczek: 4/10

Piszczek got completely dominated on the first half, his presence was barely even felt. Lost the ball a couple of times and also misplaced a couple of passes.

Sokratis: 7/10

Sokratis had a very solid game preventing Lewandwoski from scoring and ultimately frustrating him. The climax of that frustration was when he forced Lewandowski to pick up a yellow card limiting him.

Bartra: 8/10

Hands down our best defender during the whole game. Outstanding tackles inside and outside the box preventing a deadly Bayer strike force from dominating. I could have given him a higher rating but he missed a crucial penalty kick during the shoot-out.

More from BVB Buzz

Zagadou: 3/10

Boy where can I even start. Its understandable that Bosz needed a left back and decided to play him out of position, but Zagadou never got used to that new role. He was constantly getting destroyed on the left flank. The only good thing I can say about him is that he is pretty strong on and off the ball.

Sahin: 5/10

Nuri had a pretty quiet performance completing passes on the middle of the field. Sahin’s highlights are his two free-kicks that forced Bayer’s GK to save one and the other flew close to the post.

Dahoud: 4/10

Same as Sahin, Dahoud also had a quiet performance in the middle. He had an important role supporting the wingers, eventually he was subbed off at the half.

Castro: 6/10

Castro played good for us in the midfield today. He did what was expected from him, he completed passes, he even shot from outside the box and also scored his penalty on the shootout.

Pulisic: 7/10

Pulisic can be a pain in the butt for oppositions and he showed his class once again today. Scoring the opening goal of the game with a decent finish, Pulisic didn’t stop there. He also battled for the ball on the right flank during the whole game.

Aubameyang: 6/10

Auba was seen constantly pressing the opposing goalkeeper and defenders on Bayer’s own box and deep inside their territory. He scored a wonderful chip after an amazing pass by Dembele giving Dortmund a 2-1 lead. Finally Auba also scored on his penalty kick.

Dembélé: 7/10

Ousmane was completely shut down on the first half by Brazilian Rafinha. Our promising youngster started to blossom on the second half with an amazing assist.

Rode: 6/10

Rode entered the game on the half-time replacing newly transferred Dahoud. He played as a contention midfielder recovering balls. The former Bayer player played solid but missed a crucial penalty.

Passlack: 5/10

Passlack had a quiet entry into the game strengthening our left flank replacing youngster Zagadou after a horrible first half. He played better than Zagadou as a left back keeping the Bayer attack at bay.

Philipp: 4/10

Max Philipp made his debut just so he could take a important penalty during the shoot-out. He replaced Pulisic late on the game and his only highlight is his penalty kick which he scored.

Conclusion

Losing against our main rivals leaves a sour taste on everyone’s mouth, and even more if a trophy is at stake. I have to say that I have to agree with our gaffer. He said “Dortmund led three times, we have to win”.

Having a lead twice against a top opponent such as Bayer is a commodity not many teams earn and we just threw it away. Now to end on a happier mood I strongly believe that this side will do great things this season. At an individual level a couple of players that aren’t normally on our starting XI stood out which is good.
