Borussia Dortmund: Player ratings from draw against Frankfurt
By Tushar Bahl
Borussia Dortmund blew away a two goal lead as Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind in the second half to earn a 2-2 draw.
The result means that Borussia Dortmund only lead the Bundesliga standings on goal difference, despite having a 5 point cushion over Bayern Munich just 8 days ago. Here are the player ratings from Der BVB’s collapse.
Roman Burki (6/10)
Made some good saves, especially in the first half to deny Frankfurt. However, all his hard work was undone as he gave away a penalty, which helped Eintracht Frankfurt start their comeback.
Overall a decent performance by the Swiss goalkeeper, who was buoyed after signing a new contract with the club on Friday.
Marc Bartra (6/10)
Just like Burki, Bartra put in a better performance than he did in mid-week. Playing in a makeshift right back role once again, Bartra’s deflected shot was pounced upon by Nuri Sahin to give Borussia Dortmund an early lead.
Made some key interceptions but showed no signs that he should be playing in that role. Bartra was switched to centre-back around the hour mark. Was lucky not to receive a red card in stoppage time.
Julian Weigl (5/10)
Peter Bosz made a strange decision by putting Weigl in the heart of the defense. The German found it hard to deal with the home side’s physical presence and long balls. His lack of pace also made him a target for the Eintracht forwards.
He was substituted at the hour mark, when he probably should have been restored in the midfield as Dortmund looked to protect their two goal lead. Less than ten minutes later, Frankfurt were level.
Neven Subotic (6/10)
The veteran made his first appearance for the club this season in the absence of Omer Toprak and Sokratis. And Subotic made some vital tackles and put in a reliable performance.
However he showed signs of his lack of match fitness at times. He was caught out of position and had to make last-ditch tackles to recover the ball.
Jeremy Toljan (5/10)
After a horror show against Leipzig last weekend, Toljan was shifted to left-back in the absence of Marcel Schmelzer. And he failed to show his potential that made Borussia Dortmund sign him in the summer once again.
Part of the blame for Toljan’s poor start to the season should be placed on Peter Bosz. The 23-year old has been forced to switch between right-back and left-back in almost every other game. He ended the game on the right side of defense after Zagadou came on in the second half.
Nuri Sahin (6/10)
Opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a tap-in, notching his second goal of the season. Enjoyed a decent game in the middle of the park as he gave an assured performance once again.
However, he’ll be disappointed not to have won the game for Dortmund late on as his effort was closed off the line.
Gonzalo Castro (4/10)
How he continues to start week in, week out is bemusing for Dortmund fans all around the world. Castro’s display was disappointing once again.
His misplaced passes and bad touches, especially in the first half left fans frustrated. Was subbed off for Shinji Kagawa in the second half.
Mario Gotze (8/10)
Making his 100th Bundesliga appearance for Borussia Dortmund, Mario Gotze showed once again why the club bought him back. He created numerous chances for his teammates and was once again the best outfield player for Dortmund.
Played an important part in Der BVB’s search for a late winner, but only in vain.
Maximilian Philipp (6/10)
His calm and composed finish helped Borussia Dortmund double their lead in the second half. Made some good runs but could not make them count in the end.
Philipp was replaced by Jadon Sancho in the 83rd minute as Borussia Dortmund desperately looked for a late winner.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (5/10)
Was a shadow of himself as he was left isolated for large parts of the game. Peter Bosz’ system doesn’t always suit Aubameyang. The Gabon international has failed to score in 3 of his last four games.
Aubameyang did get chances to score for Borussia Dortmund however, but he failed to beat the keeper as he endured a frustrating night, much like the rest of his teammates.
Christian Pulisic (5/10)
Pulisic has largely struggled so far in a Dortmund shirt this season. And his performance against Frankfurt was more of the same from the American youngster.
While he is destined to become a star in the future, Pulisic is going through a rough patch at the moment. He missed a good chance to double Borussia Dortmund’s lead just moments after Frankfurt made it 2-1. But his shot was well saved by the home side’s goalkeeper, and Eintracht Frankfurt leveled the scores just minutes later.
Substitutes
Shinji Kagawa (6/10)
The decision to bring on an attacking minded midfielder when Dortmund were 2-0 up made no sense. And soon after Kagawa’s arrival, Dortmund lost their advantage. Kagawa failed to make a big impact as Dortmund searched for a winner late on.

Dan-Axel Zagadou (6/10)
Came on at the hour mark and played out of position once again as he slotted at left-back. Did reasonably well but failed to prevent Dortmund from losing their two goal cushion.
Jadon Sancho (N/R)
The 17-year old was recalled by the club earlier this week from the FIFA U-17 World Cup. And Sancho got to make his debut, coming on for the last 7 minutes, replacing Maximilian Philipp.
He nearly scored the winner for Borussia Dortmund late on. But his shot was well saved and Nuri Sahin missed the rebound.
