Five star Borussia Dortmund cruise past FC Magdeburg in DFP-Pokal
Borussia Dortmund put 5 goals past an inferior FC Magdeburg side to ease into the DFB-Pokal Round of 16.
After a week or two of Borussia Dortmund putting in sub-par performances, the team can finally have some relief. Many star players did not travel with the squad, such as Aubameyang, Pulisic, and Weigl, and some others. But those who did put on quite a show for the fans.
Before the match began, the FC Magdeburg crowd showed their team spirit by unveiling an impressive tifo.
Unfortunately, that was the most impressive thing they did all night.
First Half
FC Magdeburg came out of the gates pressing high against Dortmund, trying to force them to make a crucial mistake. Despite Dortmund putting many dangerous shots on goal, they couldn’t score. Maximilian Philipp missed an open goal, and Alexander Isak’s rebound shot was barely saved by the keeper. It would take Der BVB quite a while before the first goal of the match was scored.
Mahmoud Dahoud was subbed off minutes before halftime as he injured his neck. Gonzalo Castro took his place and immediately changed the game. A cross from Yarmolenko was headed down by Isak toward Castro, who put it in the back of the net. An important goal for both the team and the player. The first half ended 1-0.
Second Half
The second half started out with a bang for Dortmund. In the 47th minute, Alexander Isak nutmegged the keeper to put Borussia Dortmund ahead 2-0.
In the 73rd minute, a Magdeburg player gave away a handball in the box, awarding Dortmund a chance to put themselves up another goal. Andriy Yarmolenko knocked it into the bottom left corner, and the score became 3-0.

Just five minutes later, a cross from Shinji Kagawa was perfectly headed in by Marc Bartra. The match was now 4-0. At this point it was clear to see the Magdeburg players had given up.
But Peter Bosz’ men were not done yet. In the 90th minute, Shinji Kagawa put one last goal in to seal a Borussia Dortmund victory. The defense did an impeccable job all day, and with a few exceptions, Roman Bürki had a relatively quiet day.
A solid 5-0 victory certainly helped morale in the Dortmund camp, but it came against a 3rd tier German side. Some much needed rest was given to important players, and the squad depth got to come into play. Alexander Isak no doubt improved his development. Let’s look forward to this weekend, as Dortmund take on dark horses Hannover.
