Borussia Dortmund walked into a must win match after a poor showing in the month of October. Der Klassiker was too much for BVB in the end though. Here is a break down of the action.

First half

Everything was a bit slow during the opening minutes. Borussia Dortmund started well, knocking on Bayern’s door early on. Schmelzer was shown a yellow card in the ninth minute for a rough aerial challenge on Joshua Kimmich. BVB were looking to open the scoring, but were undone thanks to their poor defending. With 16 minutes gone, Arjen Robben opened the scoring for Bayern with a trademark strike from the edge of the box.

Bayern continued to dominate as Dortmund failed to get a foot hold in the game. And when they did, it was followed by a wrong decision.

To make things worse for the hosts in the first half, Lewandowski made it 0-2 in the 37th minute. BVB needed to start making inroads heading into the end of the half.

After getting stepped on by Kingsley Coman, Sokratis had to be subbed out just a few minutes later, with Jeremy Toljan coming on.

Yarmolenko had a couple of golden opportunities but failed to beat the goalkeeper as the Ukrainian endured a miserable game.

Second Half

Borussia Dortmund were hoping to make the most of their uphill battle, and they started the second half on the front foot. However, they failed half the deficit as Bayern’s defense stood firm.

And in the 68th minute David Alaba scored from a cross, which evaded everyone and went into the net. The score-line now read 3-0 and BVB were staring at another big defeat.

Marc Bartra scored the loan goal for Borussia Dortmund. Der Klassiker would end soon after this goal with Bayern Munich winning.

Dortmund continued to push for a goal, but it consistently led to nothing. Mario Gotze and Jadon Sancho were eventually brought on for Kawaga and Yarmolenko respectively. It was too little too late.

More from BVB Buzz

After a lovely bit of skill, Christian Pulisic found Marc Bartra in the box, who scored at the death to give the home side a consolation. Gonzalo Castro missed a sitter in front of an open goal in stoppage time.

And the match ended 1-3 with Borussia Dortmund falling to third in the Bundesliga standings. Another rough night for the Black and Yellows as they head into the international break with so many questions ahead.

This disappointing lose is leading to a lot of questions to be asked of Borussia Dortmund. The style of play and the challenges being face on the field are tough. BVB needs to find an answer to their losing ways soon if they want to contend in the league.
