According to reports circulating in the news, Liverpool has entered the race to sign Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund with Manchester United and Bayern Munich also interested.

Bayern Munich’s winger conundrum

Everybody knows that Bayern Munich is in the race for Christian Pulisic. The Bundesliga giants have an ageing flank. The duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery is no longer the dynamic powerhouse it used to be and reinforcements are in order. Bayern has failed to sign an adequate substitute despite investing several times to fill the gap. It’s no surprise that they have once more turned to their favourite team, BVB, in hopes of poaching our best talents. Pulisic is flaming hot right now and Bayern wants a piece of the pie.

Manchester United’s American marketing machine

Manchester United is in a similar boat. The club has spent heavily in the past few transfer windows to reinforce their front-line. The Red Devils have bought players like Anthony Martial, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez while the inbred duo of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford has proven its mettle on numerous occasions this season. Jose Mourinho even shot down any attempts of the club’s intention to Pulisic. Then why is this rumour still going around?

More from BVB Buzz

For starters, Manchester United is more than just a football club; it’s a brand. United has a huge following in the United States of America and signing the country’s best player will push revenue through the roof. Pulisic has a marketable personality and will be a great commercial asset. Secondly, there are still some doubts about who is going to take on the role of a winger in the side on a permanent basis. Alexis Sanchez may have moved this January but he isn’t getting any younger. United has a rich history of signing prodigious youngsters on their wings and Pulisic could be the one they so desperately need.

Has Liverpool joined the race too?

Liverpool has earned itself a reputation as one of the most deadly counter-attacking teams in the world. The front-line of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane is wrecking opposition teams and if it wasn’t for the Merseyside team’s defensive deficiencies, Liverpool would have been higher up the table.

With such attacking spoils, what’s the need for Pulisic? Well, apart from the devastating trio, there is very little depth in the squad. With Coutinho gone, the team’s bench is looking even shallower than it used to.

This could also have something to do with the fact that Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp used to once coach the Black and Yellows, famously leading them to the Champions League final in 2013. Klopp could use his relations with the club to woo Pulisic to Anfield and it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that Klopp’s project will excite the American youngster.

What does this mean for BVB?

Borussia Dortmund has a contract with Christian Pulisic till 2020, and will likely extend his stay even further if possible. The club’s new transfer policy which is a reaction to Aubameyang’s January exit means bad news for most interested parties. Watzke, Borussia Dortmund’s CEO has reiterated that the club will not be held ransom by its players.

Should Pulisic demand a move, he would be walking on egg-shells. However, BVB’s negotiating power is strong in this scenario and even if a transfer does come to fruition eventually, there’s a good chance that it won’t happen anytime soon.
