Player Ratings: Borussia Dortmund Dominate VfB Stuttgart in Second Half
By Tyler Flynn
Borussia Dortmund beat VfB Stuttgart 3-0 at home to climb one point behind Schalke 04 in the standings.
The black and yellows dominated the second half by fueling its attack and deserved to win. Here are the player ratings for Borussia Dortmund against VfB Stuttgart.
Roman Bürki (6/10)
Bürki was not tested against VfB Stuttgart’s attack very often. The one real chance VfB Stuttgart had was off a throw-in, and the shot flew off the bar after Bürki stood still. Other than that, the Swiss keeper handled everything with ease.
Łukasz Piszczek (7/10)
Piszczek played well most of the game and even helped lead the attack on Christian Pulisic’s goal. This was a good bounce-back game for Piszczek, after his poor performance in Munich last weekend.
Ömer Toprak (6/10)
Toprak was solid in the back all game, but he was not tested too often. He won a lot of balls in the air for the black and yellows, and each game he is making his case for starting regularly next season.
Sokratis Papastathopoulos (6/10)
Sokratis had a good game. He dealt with everything fine and commanded Borussia Dortmund to a good day of defending.
Marcel Schmelzer (5/10)
Schmelzer did not have the best game. He had a few costly turnovers that led to VfB Stuttgart attacking the other way in the first half. Stöger replaced him in the second half with Jeremy Toljan.
Nuri Şahin (6/10)
Şahin was picked over Weigl to start the game. The Turkish international had a solid game and provided attacking support that led to chances for the black and yellows all second half.
Marco Reus (7/10)
Reus coming back this game provided dividends for Borussia Dortmund. Reus was crucial in the buildup for the black and yellows in the attacking third. He almost scored on a volley, but the ball sailed wide of the far post.

Mahmoud Dahoud (8/10)
Dahoud is the future of Borussia Dortmund at the midfield position. He is finally catching form late in the year and showed how valuable he can be in the attacking buildup.
Maximilian Philipp (7/10)
When Philipp is fit, he is dangerous. He scored off his own rebound inside the box and showed all game that he belongs at Borussia Dortmund. He was subbed off late in the second half to give Jadon Sancho some minutes.
Michy Batshuayi (8/10)
Batshuayi continues to show Borussia Dortmund that he can be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s replacement. He buried a cross inside the box to give the black and yellows their second goal of the game. He was also dangerous when he passed the ball, and even had a beautiful flick that led to a scoring opportunity.
Christian Pulisic (9/10)
Everybody calls him Captain America for a reason. Pulisic had a beautiful goal to get Borussia Dortmund on the scoresheet. The goal was accidental, but his cross perfectly floated over the keeper into the corner. The American international created chances all game and showed why he will be world class one day.
Substitutes
Jeremy Toljan (5/10)
The fullback replaced Marcel Schmelzer in the second half. It was good for him to see some minutes to get more experience with the club. As the two fullbacks get older, Toljan will see more time.
Sergio Gómez (5/10)
The youngster finally got on the pitch for Borussia Dortmund. It was fabulous to see him in a yellow uniform for the final minutes of the game. Hopefully, the Spaniard will work his way into some more minutes as the year winds down.

Jadon Sancho (5/10)
Seeing Sancho and Gómez on the field at the same time was a treat for Borussia Dortmund fans. Sancho continues to impress and is even nutmegging veterans in training. The English international could be used as a substitute often the rest of the year.
