The Belgian striker recently suffered an injury that ended his season and slammed a post on twitter that claimed his injury was good news for English fans.

An article on TalkSPORT was published yesterday that spoke of Michy Batshuayi’s injury status and how he was in a fight to get fit before the World Cup. However, the tweet published by the site was in poor taste:

The tweet has since been deleted after Michy Batshuayi shared the link on his twitter profile for everyone to see:

The post itself wasn’t disrespectful, but the idea of creating a buzz with such negative arguments is certainly unethical.

However, more importantly, it brings to light a more recent phenomenon of footballers being put through difficult times off the pitch. While several players have come out and said that they do not read reports about them in the media, the younger section of professionals, who are still adjusting to the fame and attention are often left mentally disturbed by negative coverage.

In recent weeks, Andre Gomes of Barcelona has come out and stated how negative media response and boos from fans affected his mental health, leaving him depressed and low on confidence. The Portuguese midfielder was a high-profile purchase for Barcelona and him not living up to expectations led to the fans turning against him.

It is easy for the media to write negatively about certain players but one should still remember that they are human beings first and words should be chosen carefully. When TalkSport insinuated that English fans should celebrate Michy’s injury because Belgium is in England’s group, it crossed a certain line as pointed out by Batshuayi himself.

The Belgian is incredibly active on social media and despite several negative incidents in recent weeks, like the racial chants from Atalanta, he continues to power through.

Hopefully, Michy is not taking any of these events to heart and focuses on getting back to full fitness.

The player even thanked all his well-wishers for sending him positive messages and has wished his teammates the best of luck for the rest of the campaign:
