Borussia Dortmund is clearly in the market for a new central defender after Sokratis’ agreement with Arsenal. With Raphael Guerreiro also being potentially put on sale, Danny Rose is an understandable target as well. Victor Wanyama’s name, however, raises several questions.

Yerry Mina, Issa Diop, and Abdou Diallo

Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Borussia Dortmund is interested in signing Yerry Mina. The towering Colombian recently moved from Palmeiras to Barcelona in January after the departure of Javier Mascherano. Since then, however, he has barely featured for the club. A primary issue with the defender’s game is his bad positioning which makes him a liability while deploying a high line. If he can work out the kinks in his positioning, he has all the tools to be a world-class center-back.

More from BVB Buzz

Abdou Diallo remains BVB’s top target according to multiple reports. However, Mainz is apparently waiting to find a suitable replacement and will not let the Frenchman leave till they do so. There is also a disagreement over the player’s valuation with BVB willing to offer around £22million plus bonuses and Mainz demanding £28million.

Journalist Manu Lonjon has reported that Issa Diop is another potential target for BVB. Diallo has several suitors including Olympique Lyonnais and Arsenal and signing him would be difficult especially with the player apparently interested in a move back to France according to reports. As such, Diop is a reliable plan B for the club. The Toulouse star is tall, strong and an excellent tackler of the ball. However, his lack of discipline and poor passing could be an issue in BVB’s possession-based style.

Victor Wanyama and Danny Rose

Borussia Dortmund has been struggling on the left side of their defense for a while now. Schmelzer is incapable of running along the flank like he used to and Toljan has made no impact whatsoever in his time at the club. Raphael Guerreiro has become a floater and his best position is anybody’s guess at this point. Kicker has reported that despite not actively putting the Portuguese on the market, the club will consider bids for him. These reports along with Manchester United dropping their interest in the English full-back have probably led to these rumors. Rose has returned from injury but hasn’t found his best form and even lost his spot to Ben Davies for most of this season. The full-back would be a good addition but it is highly unlikely that there’s any serious interest in the player from BVB, considering Rose would have a number of suitors in England.

Victor Wanyama’s name is a cause for concern. Mario Gotze is rumored to be available this summer and teams like Liverpool and Everton are interested. The German midfielder was recently photographed with Naby Keita and while the photographs tell us nothing, it is certainly adding fuel to the rumors. Bild has reported that Julian Weigl will be sold this summer if a club can match their £44million valuation of the player.

Wanyama is a decent addition but he will not bring the technical ability of either player. The defensive midfielder will be a good addition to the current roster but with Nuri Sahin determined to stay and suitors for Castro difficult to come by, the midfield will definitely be something that needs downsizing.

How the board manages to pull that off, is anybody’s guess.

The transfer rumors are coming in thick and fast with little sense at this point and it’s best to wait and watch these events play out.
