Andre Schurrle is Borussia Dortmund’s most expensive player of all time but he faces a fight to stay at the club after another season of consistently abject displays.

Impressively unimpressive

André Schurrle was considered a great future player, and that notion passed him faster than Usain Bolt. Schurrle is a decorated player though; he has 5 major trophies to his name including a World Cup with Germany. How does a low output player get these accolades and a decent transfer value?

The snapshot of the winger’s career show’s this is the first year Schurrle will go without a title since 2014. Frankly, Schurrle is lucky when transferring from club to club. If going off the numbers only, he makes for a good rotational player. Someone to use if other’s need to rest.

Schurrle does get a fair amount of highlights, but his current situation has seen the worse highlights yet. The German International struggled tremendously this season due to injury and lackluster form at times. After showing so much promise, how did Borussia Dortmund get the short end of the stick?

It is not the stats it’s the player

Schurrle is easily an attacking player and it is common to see him occupy space in the final third. The issue is Schurrle is not always effective when in that area. Players will have bad matches, but he is consistently putting on horrible performances.

For the 26 matches he played in this year, he did ok with a return of 3 goals and 6 assists (per transfermarkt). Compared the season prior, he was at 5 goals and 4 assists in 25 matches. The most noticeable thing is how Schurrle himself is not a bad player.

He is not good enough for a special partnership with Reus and Gotze though. He is an average player at best, and he looks content with that as well. Considering the talent around the 27-year-old being younger and agile, Schurrle is up a creek without a paddle.

Late bloomer or overhyped

Out of favor at Borussia Dortmund is something no one wants. Ask Peter Bosz, Peter Stöger, Sebastian Rode, Erik Durm and countless others. The same for the national team, but he and Gotze can both count that as a well-missed bullet.

At the end of the day, Schurrle does not need to be on the Borussia Dortmund team. There are now 30 other players on the club as of this writing and he is fighting against young and hungry players who are raring to make their mark. Pulisic, Sancho, and Gomez made it to the top of the team sheet with Schurrle missing out for one reason or another.

Borussia Dortmund talked about letting players go and frankly I don’t imagine a better choice. Unfortunate for the winger that his career is stalled, but at least he will be a decent option in FIFA for a few more years.
