Nuri Sahin

Sahin joined Borussia Dortmund in 2001, and made his debut just four years later, becoming the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga, aged just 16. The midfielder then joined former Dortmund head coach Bert van Marwijk on loan in Feyenoord, before returning to Dortmund and becoming an important part in Jürgen Klopp’s side.

Sahin helped Borussia Dortmund win the Bundesliga title in the 2010-11 season and was voted the Bundesliga player of the year.

Then Real Madrid came calling, and Sahin joined them for a fee of 10 million euros. The problem was that Sahin had just suffered a medial collateral ligament injury before the move. And he went to Spain still unfit and aggravated the injury upon his return. Fitness issues continued to haunt him as he failed to dislodge Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira in the middle of the park.

Then Luka Modric was signed, and Sahin went to Liverpool on a season long loan. While he was a key player at the beginning, Brendan Rogers started playing him as a number ten and after failing to impress, Sahin was relegated to the bench.

The loan move was terminated in January 2014, and Sahin returned to Borussia Dortmund on an initial loan deal until the end of the season. The Turkish international found his form upon his return to the Westfalenstadion, and Borussia Dortmund made the deal permanent in the summer.

Sahin ended up staying at Dortmund for four years, and despite some special moments, his second stint was blighted by injuries. He decided to join Werder Bremen before the start of this season and helped them finish eighth in the league table.
