Lucien Favre has gone with a defensive minded, counter attacking approach in the majority of Borussia Dortmund’s games so far. And that approach simply hasn’t worked the way he would have liked.

The Black and Yellows are often far too laboured and passive in their build-up play, with way too many sideways and backwards passes despite dominating possession. And if they do find the net, they often stop playing their natural game, allowing the opposition to come at them with high intensity.
Borussia Dortmund have dropped points after taking the lead in way too many of their matches, and Lucien Favre’s lack of proactiveness has hurt them in each of those mishaps. He often decides to sit back and defend deep after taking the lead, and leaves his substitutions for the last ten minutes in order to waste time.
Some of his in-game decision making is questionable to say the least. And that needs to change starting with the second half of this season.
Favre needs to make sure that Borussia Dortmund do not abandon their natural style when holding on to a lead. We have seen time and time again that parking the bus doesn’t work for this team, and failure to learn from it will continue to cost them.
