Matthias Sammer (January 1993)

Sammer arrived at Borussia Dortmund during the winter break in 1993, and made an immediate impact from midfield. He scored ten times in 16 appearances, helping the club finish in the top four during his first season.

He was then moved into the role of a sweeper by then head coach Ottmar Hitzfield. And the switch proved to be very successful, as Sammer played a major role in the club’s back to back Bundesliga title wins in the 1994/95 and 1995/96 seasons.

Sammer was the heart of everything good Borussia Dortmund did on the pitch, and his performances saw him become the German Footballer of the Year in 1995 and 1996. He also won the Ballon d’Or in in 1996, and helped Borussia Dortmund win the UEFA Champions League in the following year.

Unfortunately, Sammer’s career was cut short by injury, and he was forced to retire in 1998. However, he returned to the Westfalenstadion as head coach in 2000, and led the club to the Bundesliga title in 2002.

Even though he was forced into early retirement, Sammer’s contributions to Borussia Dortmund’s success in the late 90s will never be forgotten. His courage, determination and spirit were truly remarkable, and there is no doubt that he was a true BVB great.
