Low: More European disappointment

Winning the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal makes it easy to get over that year’s European disappointment, but seeing how dominant the side was domestically also makes you wonder how it could go so wrong. Dortmund were drawn into a group with Arsenal, Olympiacos and Marseille, a competitive but very winnable group, and finished last in what was the only real low point for the side this season.

It started with a home draw against Arsenal, where Ivan Perisic saved the side with a late equaliser. From there Dortmund went on to lose four of their next five games, more than they lost in the entirety of the domestic season. The lone win against Olympiacos was not enough for Dortmund to at least finish in third to go onto the Europa League.

No European fixtures may have benefitted Dortmund in the domestic games that followed, and perhaps played a part in the side going undefeated to close out the season. Still, crashing out of the groups was a bad look for a side coming off a League title and in the midst of competing for, and winning, another one in succession.
