Midfielders: Axel Witsel, Julian Weigl, Julian Brandt

Midfield is an area where Borussia Dortmund have done a lot of chopping and changing over the last five years. A lot of players have come and gone, often leading to a lack of consistency in the middle of the park.

One player who has been consistent and constant since his arrival though, is Axel Witsel. The Belgian international took to the Bundesliga immediately after his 2018 move from China. Witsel has added some much needed quality and defensive reliability to the team, while also conducting the team’s attacking play. He has without a doubt been one of Dortmund’s best players of the Lucien Favre era.

Julian Weigl, who made a total of 171 appearances for Borussia Dortmund before leaving in January, joins Witsel in the midfield two. Weigl showed great potential with his performances under Thomas Tuchel, with many even comparing him to Sergio Busquets. Struggles with injuries and lack of aggression limited his progress in the seasons that followed, but he was truly incredible in the two years under Tuchel.

Julian Brandt has been at Borussia Dortmund for less than a year, but he has already shown just how good he is with his ability to orchestrate the attacking play, thread key passes and score crucial goals. Brandt has been one of Dortmund’s best players this season, and will only get better in the years to follow.
