As Atletico Madrid came to the Westfalenstadion, Hakimi was the face of a statement win for the Black and Yellows. He would start this fixture at left-back, but as usual, marked it with an excellent offensive display.

Hakimi caused the Atletico defence problems all night, and nearly inspired the opener in the 30th minute. His cutting run down the middle of the field bounced fortunately to Christian Pulisic, but the American international ended up sending his effort over the bar,

Seven minutes later, Dortmund would finally get their opener and it would come from a Hakimi assist. With the defense closing in on him, he found Axel Witsel on the edge of the box. The Belgian took his time cutting in before a somewhat fortunate deflection took the ball past Jan Oblak.

The second half was more of the same from Hakimi. After running in behind Juanfran, Hakimi was played in down the left wing by Mahmoud Dahoud. From there he had time to find Gurreiro in the box with a precise low cross, and the Portuguese international made it 2-0.

With Atletico chasing the game, Hakimi led Dortmund’s counter attack to finish off the Spanish side. Being put through by Götze, Hakimi got in behind Lucas Hernandez. From there he was never going to get caught, and unselfishly squared it to Sancho for him add Dortmund’s third.

Dortmund would win the game 4-0, making it three wins out of three to start the group stage. Hakimi finished with three assists. If not for the importance of the next game, this very well may have been his best performance with Borussia Dortmund.
