Axel Witsel (6.5/10)

Axel Witsel continues to be the heart of the Dortmund midfield. Although his second season wasn’t quite as impressive as his first, he still showed how reliable of a presence he is in the middle of the park.

Witsel is a player that may not always carry the team on his back in a noticeable sense but he consistently delivers on a high level in ways that a lot of people don’t see. Game in game out, Witsel can always be counted on which is insanely valuable in itself.

One of Dortmund’s biggest struggles in recent years is remaining consistent for a full season in order to push Bayern Munich for the title. Witsel is a bit of an outlier in that sense as he rarely has noticeably poor performances and always pulls his weight.

The only thing he could probably do more of is taking risks. Far too often, he plays the safer sideways pass. But that can be attributed to the coaches’ instructions more than anything.

Emre Can (7/10)

Emre Can joined Dortmund in January and immediately put his stamp on the team. He ended up being the type of player Dortmund thought they were getting with Thomas Delaney.

An absolute warrior in midfield, Can made his presence known one way or another in every game he played. Whether it was scoring a screamer against Leverkusen, bossing the midfield or just getting stuck in defensively the man does it all and he does it with every ounce of effort he has.

Can proved fans wrong with his performances, and will be a very important piece of Dortmund’s future in the coming years.
