Jadon Sancho the creator..and scorer

While it was not the sharpest day for Borussia Dortmund’s front line, Sancho was the shining piece in attack. He had a poor start to the game but showed his immense quality towards the end of the first half when he created some excellent chances, and was unlucky not to come away with an assist or two.

His first chance was created for Marco Reus. Dropping deeper into midfield, the Englishman found the captain with a splitting pass through the defence. Reus dribbled past Dejan Lovren, but was unable to sneak his near post shot past Mikhail Kerzhakov in the Zenit goal. Haaland may have been open in the middle, but the Zenit defense looked to be in position to block the cutback.

Soon after, Sancho found Haaland on a similar play. Picking up the ball in his own half, Sancho ran into the attacking third and found Haaland open in the box. Unfortunately the Norwegian was unable to get his effort on target, shooting wide of the far post. Opposite of the last play, this time it was Reus open in the box asking for the cut back. But it was a chance that Haaland would have fancied to score nine times out of ten.

One of the few plays he was not involved in gave him the chance to score the winner. Thorgan Hazard was pulled down on a Thomas Meunier cross, giving Borussia Dortmund the chance to take the lead from the spot.

Sancho got the opportunity, and made no mistake with his penalty. He sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for his fourth Champions League goal for the club. The 20 year old was then subbed out in the 84th minute following another impressive performance. He had four key passes to go with his goal, and completed four dribbles.

While his giveaways in the first half were frustrating, his performance continued to get better as the game went on. And he was rewarded with a well deserved goal in the end which proved to be the winner.
