Marco Rose has backed Donyell Malen to get better with time after a slow start to his Borussia Dortmund career.

Donyell Malen has endured a slow start to his Borussia Dortmund career since making the switch from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of around 30 million euros in the summer transfer window. Marco Rose has said that Malen is getting better every day, but they must give him time to fully settle in.

When asked about Malen during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference ahead of BVB’s Champions League group stage opener against Besiktas JK, Rose said:

"“Donny is an exceptionally good footballer, he has already shown that to some extent. He had a bit of work to do on his fitness level, but he’s getting better every day.”“He’s integrated himself well and has played his part in all of our games so far. He’s also still young. We’re giving him the time he needs and we’re also challenging him and encouraging him. You can’t always look at the price tag and expect him to start scoring goals from the first game.”"

Donyell Malen was Borussia Dortmund’s preferred candidate to replace Jadon Sancho this summer following the latter’s move to Manchester United. The 22 year old joined Der BVB on the back of an impressive season with PSV Eindhoven, that saw him score 27 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions.

Malen has featured in all six of Borussia Dortmund’s matches so far this season, but has been limited to just two starts. He has shown glimpses of his quality, but has yet to score his first goal for the Black and Yellows.

While Malen’s start to life in Germany has not been ideal, it is still early days in his Borussia Dortmund career. He scored his first goal of the season during the Netherlands’ 6-1 win over Turkey in the World Cup qualifiers earlier this month. And the hope will be that the goal will give him a confidence boost that will help him find his form at the club level as well.
