The long-term futures of Axel Witsel, Reinier and Marin Pongracic appear to lie away from Borussia Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund have four players in their first-team squad with contracts expiring at the end of the season. And WAZ have an update on what the future might look like for them. According to the newspaper, the tendency with Dan-Axel Zagadou is that his contract will be extended beyond the end of the season. But Axel Witsel, Reinier and Marin Pongracic all look likely to leave the Black and Yellows.

Witsel has been a mainstay in the Borussia Dortmund midfield since joining the club in 2018. But he has failed to convince with his performances so far this season. He is one of the highest earners in the squad, and the likelihood is that the BVB bosses will not extend his contract beyond the end of the season.

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly eyeing Denis Zakaria as Witsel’s replacement. The Swiss international is set to leave Borussia Mönchengladbach on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The loan deals of Reinier Jesus and Marin Pongracic are also set to expire at the end of the season. And they are both expected to leave BVB in the summer. Borussia Dortmund have the option to sign Pongracic on a permanent transfer from Wolfsburg in the summer. But the defender has not been able to make much of an impact so far.

Like Pongracic, Reinier has also not been able to make his mark. The Real Madrid forward has been limited to just 11 appearances so far this season, and has yet to register his first goal or assist.
