Marco Reus is determined to return to full fitness in the new year after the disappointment of missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Marco Reus was not included in Germany’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after failing to recover in time from the ankle injury he suffered in September. The Borussia Dortmund captain worked hard to make his comeback before Hansi Flick’s final squad was revealed. But his hopes were dashed as the pain in his ankle did not subside.

Reus made an appearance on BILD-TV on Sunday, where he talked about the disappointment of missing the World Cup through injury. The 33 year old said that he is now aiming to get back to full fitness soon and return to training with Borussia Dortmund early next year.

"“Of course, it’s very, very bitter. But it’s part of competitive sport. I will deal with it in a sensible way and start fresh in the new year. I’m generally a very positive person, and I did everything I could to be able to take part in this World Cup – unfortunately, the ankle put a spanner in the works.”“Unfortunately, there were a few complications, maybe I returned a bit too early to just get back into the rhythm. We then tried everything to get me fit in time. In the end, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. The focus now is on me being fully fit and without pain to start training on January 2.”"

Borussia Dortmund are set to play three friendly matches in Asia very soon. Reus will make the trip to Asia but will not be taking part in any of the matches. The BVB players not involved at the 2022 FIFA World Cup will then get a small break before returning to training in early January.

Marco Reus was also asked about his future during the interview. The Borussia Dortmund captain said that he loves the club very much, but refused to reveal what the future holds for him.

"“I have made my wishes known publicly in recent weeks and months. Everyone knows that I have a great relationship with this club, that I love the club very, very much. But as for the other questions, you have to ask Sebastian Kehl. In the end, it’s not up to me.”"
