The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway as we are edging closer to the knockout stages with teams playing their final group fixtures of the tournament.

In this article, we take a look at how the BVB stars fared this week for their respective national teams and what's their status in the tournament now:

Beier gets his first minutes for Germany in Ecuador defeat

After patiently waiting on the wings in their first two fixtures, Maximilian Beier finally got his chance off the bench for Germany in their 2-1 loss to Ecuador. He replaced his Borussia Dortmund teammate Felix Nmecha in the 65th minute and had 30 minutes to play.

Unfortunately though, Beier struggled to get involved in the clash. He made just four accurate passes while remaining a peripheral figure in the closing stages of the proceedings. Nmecha too, had a stinker as it was his cheap giveaway in the midfield that led to Nilson Angulo's opening goal for Ecuador. As for Waldemar Anton, the centre-back was an unused substitute.

Germany face Paraguay in the Round of 32 on Monday, 29 June.

Svensson makes cameo in Sweden's Japan draw

Dortmund's left-back Daniel Svensson came off the bench for Sweden in their 1-1 draw as the Nordic side booked their place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He replaced Alexander Bernhardsson in the 75th minute and looked to keep the juices flowing for the Blagult.

This was just his second appearance at the tournament, having came on for a few seconds in their opening game against Tunisia while also operating as a right midfielder instead of his usual left-back spot at Dortmund.

Sweden come up against France in the last-32 on 30 Tuesday, 30 June.

Ryerson on the bench for Norway's loss to France

Norway were dealt a blow in their last game against Senegal when Julian Ryerson went off early, sparking injury concerns. There were speculations that he could miss their last group fixture against France, and while he did make it to the matchday squad, Borussia Dortmund's assist-king remained an unused substitute.

Head coach Stale Solbakken made a raft of changes to his starting lineup with knockout stage progression already secured, even benching their star striker and former BVB ace Erling Haaland as Norway were crushed 4-1 by France, powered by a sensational hat-trick from Ousmane Dembele.

Norway face Ivory Coast in the next round on Tuesday, 30 June.
