Borussia Dortmund are in a precarious position regarding United States Men’s National Team player, Gio Reyna. BVB are preparing for their Club World Cup campaign in the USA, but their American midfielder is doubtfully going to be in the starting XI when the tournament starts.
Unfortunately, the Americans season with Borussia Dortmund not very impactful. The player managed less than 350 minutes on the pitch, and most of those came from cameo bench appearances. At this point, it’s safe to say the American has not lived up to the expectations place on his shoulders. Without a clear place in Niko Kovač’s Dortmund, an exit for Reyna seems most likely, and most beneficial to both parties.
Since the winter, Reyna has been linked with La Liga side, Real Sociedad, who have apparently been monitoring the player’s development and could use someone of his profile as they look to push for UEFA Champions League qualification next season. Yet they don’t appear to be the only interested party.
The news outlet, RTI Sports is reporting that Brazilian side Flamengo, who hope to boost their squad ahead of the Club World Cup. A transfer there could allow Reyna more minutes in the Club World Cup, but he’d have to integrate quickly. Either way, Gio Reyna will need a transfer somewhere he can play regularly if he hopes to play a role in Mauricio Pochettino’s USMNT in next summer’s World Cup.
BVB will also need to offload players to help bankroll the transfers of hopeful targets like Jobe Bellingham, Rayan Cherki, and Jame McAtee.
