Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha has admitted that his side needs to become more clinical with their finishing if they were to mount a serious title challenge in the 2026-27 Bundesliga season.
Last term, the BVB achieved their highest finish in three years by coming in behind champions Bayern Munich as the runners-up while also accruing their highest points tally in seven years.
Yet, the gap between them and Bayern was massive, with the Bavarians bagging 16 points more than Dortmund and scoring a 52 goals more (122 to 70).
Die Schwarzgelben also registered the least number of defeats in the league after Bayern with only five losses, but the alarming seven draws eventually proved costly.
Nmecha, who only recently returned to the squad following a vacation after the 2026 FIFA World Cup commitments with Germany, felt they need to be more ruthless with their chances.
Speaking to Sky Sport Germany:
""I think, generally speaking, we just need to be a bit more clinical in our matches. We need to win the big games and not draw as many matches as last season. That will make a huge difference. If you look at last season's games, we hardly lost at all – against Bayern and, I think, two other games. But all those draws didn't do us any favours in terms of points. If we do better this season, we have a very good chance.""said the 25-year-old
Another major Achilles heel of Dortmund last term was their poor record against teams that finished inside the top seven places of the Bundesliga rankings: in 12 top-flight matches against them, the Black and Yellow won just four times.
Nmecha also urged Dortmund to exert more control in matches and find their attacking rhythm in order to score more goals than last time.
""I think we want to have a bit more control in a few games. Last season it was sometimes a bit chaotic. We didn't concede many goals, but offensively we still need to find the key and hopefully score more goals. That will be important this season.""added Nmecha
Indeed, Serhou Guirassy was the only player in the squad to hit double-digits in terms of goals scored last season with 17. Bayern, though, had three forwards netting 15 or more, including the Bundesliga top-scorer Harry Kane (36).
What's more worrying is that Dortmund have lost two more attacking players who finished among their top scorers behind Guirassy last season, with Julian Brandt (7 goals) departing the club on a free transfer and Karim Adeyemi (also 7) joining FC Barcelona.
It will be interesting to see how the BVB fill up these gaps in their vanguard.
