Borussia Dortmund star Marcel Sabitzer has lauded his side for their exceptional display in a dominant 4-0 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, Ramy Bensebaini and Fabio Silva all scored apiece in the game as Die Borussen picked up a big victory on their 1000th home league game.

Coming into the fixture on the back of consecutive defeats, Die Borussen were seemingly shaken as their title hopes were officially over and Champions League qualification was delayed.

But they came flying out of the blocks on Sunday to deliver one of their finest performances of the season, marking their joint-biggest league win of the campaign too.

Freiburg were visibly exhausted and low on energy, probably from their midweek clash to Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal Cup semi-finals, which they ended up losing 2-1. Sabitzer empathized with the Braisgau side.

"“Freiburg had a tough game on Thursday. We know from our own experience that you have to find your feet in the first ten to 20 minutes. We took advantage of that. We played very well in the first 30 minutes, scored three goals straight away and, in the end, fully deserved to win by such a margin.""

Beier fired Dortmund in front after only eight minutes as the German international raced down the left wing with full pace and pomp to connect with a cross from Ramy Bensebaini, before taking a touch and slotting it beyond the Freiburg goalkeeper for 1-0.

Just six minutes later, Guirassy doubled their advantage with a clean finish from close-range after Julian Brandt brilliantly picked him up with a looping cross above a few red shirts.

Dortmund continued their dominance and added a third goal in the 31st minute when Bensebaini turned scorer from a lovely corner delivery by Julian Ryerson.

For just the second time this season - with the last one being against Mainz in February - the BVB led 3-0 at half-time and were seemingly on their way back to a win after defeats in their last two top-flight clashes.

Substitute Fabio Silva then added a fourth in the 87th minute to put the final nail in Freiburg's coffin as the Portuguese dynamite made a confident finish into the bottom-right corner while under pressure from three Freiburg players.

Sabizter lauded his side for their electric display while emphasizing their ambition for the remainder of the season, which is to secure a runners-up finish for the first time since the 2022-23 season.

""We moved the ball around well and scored some fine goals. We had the energy and sharpness we needed at just the right moment. And then you end up winning a game like this 4-0. Our aim is to finish at worst second in the league. That’s the mission.”"
added Sabitzer

Dortmund return to action on Sunday, 3 May against Borussia Monchengladbach.
