Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha is all fired up for the 2026-27 season. After a brief vacation following his promising stint with Germany's national team at the FIFA World Cup, the midfielder reported back to work last week and has flown with the squad to Japan for their preseason tour.
Since joining from Wolfsburg in 2023, Nmecha has grown in influence on the side and became a first-team regular during Niko Kovac's first full-season in-charge last term, making 45 appearances and even bagging five goals.
But the player isn't content and wants to play a bigger role within the team. In his first interview since rejoining the squad post World Cup, Nmecha made his intentions clear to Sky Sports Germany and it bodes well with Dortmund's title ambitions too.
""I want to take on a great deal of responsibility within the team. I hope to be a key player, to give my all for the team and to keep developing, step by step. I can already feel that I’m taking on and fulfilling this responsibility, because things have gone well over the last two seasons. I just want to carry on like this and take another step forward this season.""said the 25-year-old
Nmecha scored Germany's first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an absolute belter in their 7-1 shellacking of debutants Curacao before bagging an assist for Deniz Undav in their narrow win over Ivory Coast on matchday two of the group stages.
Although Die Mannschaft couldn't make it far into the tournament after being knocked out from the Round of 32 on penalties by Paraguay, the player is now focused on winning trophies with his club but wants to approach the games one at a time.
""I believe that in every cup competition, and indeed throughout the season, the aim must be to win. I know, both for myself and as a team, that we’re not just there to make up the numbers. Of course we want to win. But it’s important not to get too far ahead of ourselves. The aim is clear, but we have to take it one match at a time.""added Nmecha
Dortmund would have a great opportunity to start their campaign with a trophy as they face Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on 22 August at the Signal Iduna Park and Nmecha feels winning it would be a pep in their step.
""We’d obviously like to win. Winning a match like that straight away against Bayern would naturally give us a lot of momentum. Hopefully we’ll manage it.""said Nmeecha
