Borussia Dortmund fell to a shock 1-0 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Sunday as Haris Tabakovic scored an 88th-minute winner.
Niko Kovac's side were widely expected to prevail here given their incredible record in the fixture and Gladbach's own struggles, but came undone with some lackluster display.
With Champions League qualification already secured, the BVB were hoping to finish the season by winning their final three league matches and collect the maximum available points.
But just as in their recent defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, Dortmund were painfully prosaic while the loss further soured their season climax.
Here are some interesting stats from the match:
Unbeaten streak ends
Borussia Dortmund's six-game unbeaten streak ended last night with the defeat. Since a 4-2 loss in November 2022, the BVB had managed to avoid another defeat in the fixture while winning five of their next six.
Goalless streak ends
Just like their unbeaten run against Gladbach, Dortmund's scoring run also came to an end with the side drawing a blank last night - a first since September 2021. Back then too, the BVB had lost 1-0 at the Borussia Park on matchday six of the Bundesliga.
Struggles at Borussia Park
Borussia Dortmund haven't done well at the Borussia Park in recent times. Speaking of their Bundesliga record there, the club has won just once from their last six trips to Gladbach's home ground, a 2-1 win in April 2024, while losing an alarming four times.
Dip in form
For much of the season, Dortmund seemed hard to beat. Until 28 February, they had lost just once in 23 matches, the fewest alongside champions Bayern Munich. But the Der Klassiker rivals inflicted a second defeat upon them that day, ending their 12-game unbeaten streak.
From their next eight games though, Dortmund have suffered three more losses - all coming within the last three weeks, signaling a dip in form. The run of three defeats in four league matches is their worst in the competition since four defeats in six from February 2025 to March 2025.
First win in six
By contrast, this was Borussia Monchengladbach's first Bundesliga win in six games and it couldn't have come sooner as it assured them of safety, staving off a humiliating relegation.
The Foals were on a low ebb coming into last night's fixture. They had drawn four and lost once from their last five, having seemingly been stuck in a rut. But against the odds, Gladbach ended that run here.
