Niklas Süle, who still has a contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2026, has decided to stay at the Signal Iduna Park and fulfil his current deal. This decision is also related to coach Niko Kovač, as Süle has been in the starting XI in the last four Bundesliga games, as reported by SPORTBild.
Despite being the highest earner in Borussia Dortmund, Niklas Süle did not have the ideal start since coming to the club as a free agent in 2022. Due to many injuries and questionable physical conditioning, Süle did not stay on the pitch much for Borussia Dortmund, either being benched or sidelined. However, things started changing at the beginning of this season.
Following a disciplined training that resulted in severe weight loss, Niklas Süle seemed to be destined to turn his luck around in Black and Yellow. He even started for many games when the then-coach Nuri Sahin decided to play in a back-three system, but another injury blow took him out of action for months.
When Niklas was back, he met an old friend in Niko Kovač, who was his former manager at Bayern Münich and his new head coach following Sahin's dismissal midseason. Süle said he was happy to work with him again and for a good reason. Since Kovač also transitioned to a back-three formation, Süle began playing regularly and seemed to find his good old form.
But, despite his apparent resurgence, Niklas Süle will need to impress if he aspires for a new contract at Borussia Dortmund. With his current form and plans to play in Black and Yellow for one more season, a new contract could be in play. At the same time, BVB will have to take care so Niklas doesn't leave on a free in the summer of 2026.
