Borussia Dortmund will not be signing Ian Maatsen permanently, with the left-back on the verge of a move to Aston Villa.
In what will come as a bitter blow to the club, Borussia Dortmund are set to miss out on the signing of Ian Maatsen. The 22 year old is on the verge of joining Aston Villa, with an agreement already in place over a deal worth around 45 million euros. According to reports, Maatsen will receive a six year contract at Aston Villa, and the move could be completed by the end of the week.
Borussia Dortmund had been pushing for the permanent signing of Maatsen following his impressive loan spell at the club in the second half of the season. But the Black and Yellows weren’t willing to pay more than 25-30 million euros. And when Aston Villa flexed their financial muscle, BVB simply did not stand a chance.
The need for a new left-back remains at Borussia Dortmund, although they do have Ramy Bensebaini and Tom Rothe in their ranks if they do decide not to bring in further reinforcements.
Nuri Sahin is said to be interested in signing compatriot Ferdi Kadıoğlu, who plays for Fenerbahce. He is one of the many alternatives Borussia Dortmund have in mind.
The BVB bosses will certainly be disappointed to miss out on the signing of Ian Maatsen. The Dutch full-back made an instant impact after joining on loan from Chelsea in January, and played a crucial role in Borussia Dortmund’s run to the Champions League final. He made a total of 23 appearances for the club, scoring three goals and assisting a further two.
