The match was winding down. With less than five minutes of normal time left, the scores were 1-1 at the Volkswagen Arena as Borussia Dortmund needed some miracle again.

Despite the stark disparity in quality and form between them and their hosts Wolfsburg, Niko Kovac's side had struggled to grab the game by scruff of it.

A 38th-minute opener from Julian Brandt was canceled out Konstantinos Koulierakis minutes into the second half, which was the most predictable thing during the game.

Going ahead in a match only to then let their opponents back into it by conceding an equalizer has become a worrying trend for Der BVB this season.

And so, the script appeared to repeat itself in Lower Saxony on Saturday too as they were left to find another goal to secure all three points.

Guirassy steps up

In the 87th minute, Felix Nmecha came into possession near the penalty box and scampered up a few steps despite resistance from Die Wolfe defenders.

After laying it off for Fabio Silva, the forward then squared the ball to an onrushing Serhou Guirassy who slammed it home beyond Kamil Grabara for 2-1.

For the second league game in a row, the Guinean international stepped up to the plate when his side needed him the most and delivered.

Against bottom-dwellers Heidenheim a week before, it was his late double that helped turn the match around from 2-1 down to win 3-2, saving Dortmund's beacon from an embarassing loss to Bundesliga's worst side.

Guirassy getting back into his element

While neither of their last two top-flight victories were convincing, Kovac would be happy to see his striker finding his attacking boots again and coming up trumps in key moments.

Having rather started the campaign by scoring in their first four games in all competitions, Guirassy appeared to begin the 2025-26 season from where he left off the previous one.

But much to everyone's surprise, his form fizzled out soon after and his goals came sporadically. He struck once in a while and then disappeared into anonymity again.

Over the last week though, the 29-year-old has been showing signs of his former self which made him a star at the club in his debut campaign, netting a remarkable 38 goals in 50 games.

A devastating finisher with predatory instincts, Guirassy has the capability to rank among Europe's best again, should he keep up this renewed form and vigor to build a ruthless scoring streak in the weeks ahead.
