Borussia Dortmund star Waldemar Anton admitted that they left a lot to be desired in the final third during their 0-0 draw against Union Berlin on Saturday.
The BVB drew for the second league game in a row, having blown away a two-goal lead in the dying embers against Werder Bremen last weekend, to allow Bayern Munich draw level.
Both teams are tied on 14 points but the Bavarians occupy first position by virtue of goal-difference.
What should have been a routine victory, turned into a frustrating stalemate as Dortmund failed to convert their possession dominance into attacking menace.
In fact, the BVB finished with just two shots on target and drew a blank in a league game for the first time this season - against a team that had conceded 17 goals from their previous five outings.
Anton, who played full 90 minutes of the draw in Berlin, made a harsh admission that Dortmund aren't firing at all cylinders offensively.
"There are things we’re not doing well in the final third at the moment. We simply make the wrong decisions. That’s something we can work through and thoroughly analyze, though. We just need to keep our calm. As I said, we're a young team."
During a lackluster first half, the BVB failed to create anything of note offensively. With Serhou Guirassy closely marked, their focal attacking point was neutralized.
Julian Ryerson looked to make things happen from the right with his domineering forward runs and devastating crosses, but the Iron Ones dealt with them effectively.
It wasn't until the final phase of the match when the Prussians actually took control and began to see a few openings with substitutes Fabio Silva and Mathis Albert injecting poise and dynamism.
Quite early on in the second half though, Maximilian Beier wasted a glorious chance to score by firing Ryerson's cross wide off target.
Serhou Guirassy came in with another great chance late on, but Albert came in his way, blocking the striker's effort inside the box which could hit the target.
For the second game in a row, Dortmund have failed score a goal. Anton vowed on behalf of his team to keep working on their weaknesses right now, especially their attacking skills.
"We’ll work through this and do even better going forward. We're all going through this experience together. We have to fight and work hard to get back on track. That little bit of luck we're missing in the final third is something you have to earn. That’s what we’ll be doing over the next few days."
