Borussia Dortmund stars Serhou Guirassy and Daniel Svensson have expressed their delight at seeing off Villarreal 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Both players featured for the BVB in their European opener of the season at the Signal Iduna Park, with Guirassy even scoring a late brace that helped his side prevail.
The Guinean ace, who also struck twice against the Yellow Submarine in last year's League Phase contest, thanked his attacking cohort Fabio Silva for setting up his first of the two goals.
"I’m very happy with the result. It was a crazy game and once again a very special atmosphere. Of course, I’m very grateful to Fábio for his great assist. "
For the second game in a row, Dortmund shipped in two goals: Santiago Mourino headed one in from a corner to make it 1-1 before Guirassy accidentally nudged the ball into his own net in stoppage-time.
The BVB striker lamented that his team conceded those goals but asserted that the eventual victory would be a huge morale-booster for their forthcoming games.
"We shouldn’t have conceded those goals. We still need to work on that. But in the end, we’re glad we won. That gives us confidence for the rest of the season."
Svensson too completed full 90 minutes on the night as Kovac played him as a makeshift centre-back once again in the absence some natural choices in that position.
The Swede held the fort well for BVB, demonstrating positional authority and vision as Villarreal were surprisingly menacing on the night, unlike their tame performance last year.
He reiterated their desire to win the maximum possible games out of the eight schduled for the first round of the Champions League:
"This win is very important. We have a total of eight games, and of course we want to win as many of them as possible."
However, Svensson is cautious about his team losing control in the match as they did on Tuesday too, asserting that Dortmund must avoid concession of goals for more dominant match results.
"We know how strong our opponents are, so a win right off the bat feels especially good. We still need to find a way to control the game better so it doesn’t get so close at the end again."
Borussia Dortmund return to action on Saturday, 12 September for a Bundesliga match against promoted side Paderborn at the Signal Iduna Park.
