Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha is having a ball at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He scored Germany's opening goal of the tournament against Curacao before bagging an assist in their late 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.
The midfielder is repaying Julian Naglesmann's faith with consistently top-notch displays in midfield to emerge as Germany's unlikely hero despite a relative lack of experience on the international stage with only eight caps to his name before the World Cup.
His performances have drawn plaudits from German supporters from around the world and now even television pundits are heaping praise on Nmecha. The latest to do so is Gary Neville, who labeled him 'outstanding' in a recent program.
Speaking on ITV, he said:
"“The more he plays like he did the other night, the more expensive he’ll get. He looked outstanding the other night. It looked like he had absolutely everything.""said the former Manchester United star
Against Ivory Coast, Nmecha completed 91% of his passes and created two big chances as he ran the show in the centre of the park for Germany with his dominant physical style of play and devastating passing range.
Although the truth is, that's how Nmecha became a household name at Borussia Dortmund last season. He may not have always grabbed the headlines but quietly turned in assured displays in midfield that played a crucial role in helping the side assert themselves over their opponents.
The 25-year-old is now successfully carrying his club form onto the international stage, perhaps the biggest stage of them all, to prove his value in this Germany squad too. Nmecha's remarkable rise in the national team means Naglesmann could no longer look away from him and guarantee the Dortmund star more starting roles in the years ahead.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright also shared Neville's sentiment of the player.
"“When you look at him, he breaks lines, he gets into the box, he’s got Kimmich to come in and fill in for him. He can play as a No.8 or No.10, we can see he can finish, you can see why teams are interested in him. He’s got everything.""said the 62-year-old
Felix Nmecha has been linked with a move to Manchester United recently, although Liverpool and Chelsea are said to be keeping tabs on him too. He signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund in March this year but has a release clause which if activated, can see him move elsewhere.
